Our Permanent Residents & Sanctuary Guardians

Our Lifetime Promise

At Sequoia, "Rescue" isn't a temporary state; it’s a lifelong commitment. While our pipeline moves many dogs toward new families, these specific residents are the heart of our permanent sanctuary. We provide the specialized, long-term care they need to live out their lives with the dignity they deserve.

Our Permanent Residents & Sanctuary Guardians

Sal: The Original "Foster Fail"

🏠 The One & Only: Sal
"The Foster Fail from the East Side"
📍 The Backstory: The Backyard Trio
In October 2021, three 12-week-old puppies—Sal, Barrel, and Oogie Boogie—were living in a backyard on the East Side of Bakersfield. They had spent their first couple of months there, and while they were physically healthy and well-fed, they suffered from a severe lack of socialization. They were essentially blank slates who hadn't yet been introduced to the world beyond their fence.
A neighbor, recognizing that the puppies weren't wanted by their owner, stepped in and took them. She reached out to a rescue, and we were contacted to be their foster home. At the time, Sequoia was still in its early stages, operating as a dedicated foster home.
💔 The Ones Who Went Before
The timing of the rescue was critical. We later heard that there were originally five puppies in the litter, but two had already been given away before the rescue was contacted. Those two went out into the world without the benefit of the socialization and training we were able to provide for the remaining three. Knowing they were out there somewhere only strengthened our resolve to give Sal and her brothers the best possible start.
🩹 Finding Their Way
Arriving at exactly 12 weeks old, the puppies were at a pivotal age. We dedicated our time to the socialization and confidence-building they had missed out on during their first two months. While Barrel and Oogie Boogie eventually moved on to their own forever homes, Sal—a striking German Shepherd/Chow mix—made it clear she had already found hers. She became our first, and to this day, our only official "foster fail."
🐕 Profile at a Glance
Breed: German Shepherd / Chow Mix
Rescued: October 2021 (at 12 weeks old)
The Trio: Sal and her brothers, Barrel & Oogie Boogie.
Focus: Socialization and world-building.
🛡️ Why Sal is Special to Sequoia
Sal is a living piece of our history.
The Foundation: She was there when Sequoia was "just" a foster home, watching it grow into the sanctuary it is today.
The Critical Window: Her success proves how important those first few months are, and how much a life can change when you catch a puppy at exactly the right time.
The One Who Chose Us: Out of all the fosters who have passed through our doors, Sal was the one who decided the rules didn't apply to her.
🌟 A Note from the Founder: The One Who Stayed
"Sal, Barrel, and Oogie Boogie were healthy, but they were invisible to the world for their first twelve weeks. Getting them when we did allowed us to be their bridge to the outside world. While her brothers eventually moved on, Sal decided she wasn't going anywhere. As a Shepherd/Chow mix, she has a quiet, steady loyalty. She remains my first and only foster fail—a constant reminder of where we started and the beautiful life that can come from a backyard rescue."The Heart of the Sanctuary

Sal holds a very special title at Sequoia: she is our one and only "foster fail." While our mission is to keep the pipeline moving so we can save more lives, Sal made it clear from our very first days that she wasn't going anywhere. She chose us just as much as we chose her.

Today, she serves as the unofficial "welcoming committee" for incoming rescues. She has a grounded, steady energy that helps more nervous dogs realize they are finally safe. Sal is the living reminder that sometimes, the best-laid plans are meant to be broken for the right dog.

Chai: The Resilient Soul

"The Shadow Turned Sanctuary Guide"
📍 The Backstory: The Invisible Euthanasia List
In October 2024, Chai was a name on the upcoming euthanasia list at the Apple Valley Shelter. A stray who had been dumped on the streets, she was paralyzed by fear. Her intake photo showed a dog with "cow eyes," cowering in the corner, pressed flat against the floor, refusing to make eye contact. In a shelter where people look for outgoing pets, Chai was invisible.
⏳ The Final Day
We pulled her on her very last day. When brought down the hall, she was so shut down she had to be dragged. The moment her leash was removed, she didn't run for freedom—she ran to a corner and buried her face in it. Most saw a dog who was "broken," but we saw a dog who just needed a safe place to land. We said, "We’ll take her," knowing the road to healing would be long.
🐕 Why Chai is a Forever Resident
Chai is much better today, but she remains a Lifetime Sanctuary Resident because her confidence is rooted in the stability of Sequoia. She doesn't have to be "adoptable" by human standards because she has found a far more important role within our walls.
The Great Greeter: The most magical part of Chai’s recovery is her relationship with other dogs. While she is still wary of the world, she finds immense comfort in every puppy and new dog that comes through our doors.
Her True Self: When a new arrival is brought in, the cowering dog disappears. You see the confident, beautiful dog she truly is as she steps up to greet them. She helps lead them into the pack, finding her own strength by helping others find theirs.
A Permanent Purpose: Because she has found her "job" and her comfort here, she will never be up for adoption. Sequoia is her home, and the pack is her family.
📊 Profile at a Glance
Arrival: October 2024
Status: Permanent Sanctuary Resident / "The Welcome Committee"
Rescue Origin: Apple Valley Shelter
Superpower: Guiding new arrivals into the safety of the pack.
🛡️ Why Chai Matters to Sequoia
Chai represents the specialized healing that only a sanctuary can provide.
Confidence Through Connection: She proves that trauma doesn't disappear, but it can be managed through the support of the pack.
The Comfort of Home: Her transformation from burying her face in a corner to greeting new dogs with her head held high is the ultimate victory.
🌟 A Note from the Founder
"Chai was a dog who tried to hide from the world until she realized she could help others navigate it. Seeing her act like a confident leader whenever a new puppy arrives is one of the greatest honors of my life. She isn't just a resident; she is a vital part of the healing process for every other dog that follows in her footsteps. She is home, she is safe, and she is finally beautiful in her own skin."A Lifetime of Care

Chai didn’t come to us at the end of her journey, but near the very beginning. Arriving at Sequoia when she was only about 6 months old, Chai was already facing medical challenges that would have been overwhelming for most. While most puppies her age were focused on play, Chai needed a sanctuary that could provide the "heavy lifting" of specialized medical management and long-term stabilization.

Because she required a level of care and consistency that goes beyond a traditional adoption, Chai became a permanent member of the Sequoia family. She is a testament to our commitment to every dog, regardless of age—if they need a forever safety net to thrive, we provide it. Today, she isn't defined by her medical needs, but by her joyful spirit and her place in the pack.

Storm: The Ghost of Ridgecrest

🌲 Sanctuary Legacy: Storm
"From a Broken Heart to a Warm Hearth"
📍 The Backstory: A Ghost in the Kennel
Storm (then known as Stormy) was found during a chance trip to the DMV in Ridgecrest. While visiting the local shelter—a facility overflowing with German Shepherds—we found him. He was laying at the front of his kennel, staring blankly, not looking at the people passing by. He was clearly very old, with cloudy, sad eyes that spoke of a heart that had simply given up.
I sat with him for a long time, just talking to him and telling him he was a good boy. When I asked the staff about him, the story was heartbreaking: he was chipped. The shelter had called the registered name and phone number multiple times, leaving message after message. No one ever called back. No one ever came. He had been sitting there for over a month with zero interest from his owners or the public.
🩹 The Weight of Age and Pain
Storm wasn't "shelter-ready." He struggled to walk due to significant hip issues and visible pain. Between his age, his mobility challenges, and the fact that he had already been overlooked for weeks, his chances of being adopted were almost zero. He was a dog who had clearly lived a full life with someone, and the thought of him spending his final days on a cold kennel floor was unbearable.
⏳ The Journey Home
He stayed on my mind for two weeks. I called the shelter to see if anyone had shown interest; they hadn't. I went back to Ridgecrest to adopt him, but even then, there was a hurdle—the shelter realized last minute he hadn't been neutered. After a three-day delay for surgery, I finally brought him home to Sequoia.
🎉 Life at the Sanctuary: The Golden Years
Storm is no longer the "ghost" we found in Ridgecrest. Today, he is a cherished member of the sanctuary family.
Mobility & Comfort: Utilizing our medical background, we started Storm on a regimen of joint supplements and chews. The transformation has been incredible—his mobility has improved tremendously, and he is finally living without constant pain.
Simple Pleasures: You can usually find him sleeping happily in front of the fire or lounging in the yard, soaking up the California sun.
A Constant Companion: After being abandoned by the people he knew for years, Storm’s greatest joy is simply being by my side. He finally has the peace and security he deserves.
🐕 Profile at a Glance
Arrival: Late 2024
Status: Permanent Sanctuary Resident
Breed: German Shepherd
Superpower: The ability to find the perfect sunbeam.
🛡️ Why Storm Matters to Sequoia
Storm represents why we exist. He was a "Red-Listed" soul not because of aggression, but because he was old and "broken."
The Unseen Senior: We specialize in the dogs that others consider "unadoptable" due to age or medical costs.
Medical Advocacy: Storm is proof that with the right supplements and care, a "crippled" dog can find their stride again.
Restoring Dignity: At Sequoia, Storm isn't a "stray at the DMV"—he is a king with a spot by the fire.
🌟 A Note from the Founder
"Storm was a dog who had been betrayed by a phone that wouldn't stop ringing. He knew he had been left behind, and his eyes showed it. Seeing him now, comfortably curled up by the fireplace or trotting through the yard with a wagging tail, is a reminder that it is never too late for a new beginning. He spent a month being 'nobody’s dog' in a shelter; he will spend the rest of his life being 'our dog' at Sequoia."From a Broken Heart to a Warm Hearth

Storm (formerly Stormy) was found at the Ridgecrest shelter, a senior German Shepherd who had been abandoned and ignored. With cloudy eyes and a body racked with hip pain, he had given up hope. After his owners failed to answer the shelter's calls for over a month, we stepped in.

Through the Sequoia medical protocol of joint supplements and pain management, Storm has seen a total transformation. He went from a dog who could barely walk to a happy resident who trots through the yard. He now spends his days sleeping by the fire and staying glued to our side—finally knowing what it feels like to be wanted.

Gaiya: The Last Minute Rescue

🌲 Sanctuary Legacy: Gaia
"The 12:00 Miracle & The Purebred Survivor"
In January 2023, Gaia’s life was reduced to a line item on a social media post. She wasn't the star of her own rescue plea; she was simply one name on a crowded networking post of dogs scheduled for euthanasia the next day at the Apple Valley Shelter.
At just four months old, Gaia was invisible. Caught with a catchpole and paralyzed by trauma, she was deemed "unadoptable." The shelter gave her only 24 hours after her stray hold to be claimed—a death sentence for a puppy who couldn't even look at a human.
⏳ The Race for the 11th Hour
Our founder saw that list late the night before Gaia’s time was up. After a frantic 8:00 AM phone call the next morning, we learned the deadline: Gaia was to be euthanized at noon. Pleading for her life, our founder secured a single hour of grace from the manager to cover the drive time. Gaia was pulled from the list with only minutes to spare.
🩹 A Foundation of Trauma
While we don't know the specifics of Gaia’s life before the shelter, it is clear that she experienced extreme trauma during her most formative months. This was not simple "lack of socialization"—it was deep-seated fear. To this day, Gaia has specific triggers that require an expert level of understanding to manage. It takes her an immense amount of time to warm up to new people as well as other dogs; she has certain triggers that take a very high-level experienced dog owner to deal with, and due to those reasons, as well as the other ones above, she is not adoptable.
🐕 Why Gaia is a Forever Resident
Gaia is a Lifetime Sanctuary Resident because her healing journey is unique. While she continues to grow, her needs go beyond what a traditional home can provide.
Emotional Anchors: Gaia relies heavily on the established dogs here at the sanctuary for emotional support and balance. She looks to her canine companions to navigate her environment; without them, she loses her sense of security.
Specialized Management: Because of her high-level behavioral triggers and the extreme length of time she needs to trust, Gaia requires a professional-grade environment.
The Promise of Stability: Transitioning to a new home would be detrimental to the progress she has made. At Sequoia, she has a predictable world where her triggers are understood and her pace is respected.
🧬 Profile at a Glance
Breed: Purebred Miniature Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler)
Status: Permanent Sanctuary Resident
Rescue Date: January 2023
Needs: High-level experienced handling and pack-based support.
🌟 A Note from the Founder
"Gaia was failed by humans long before she reached that shelter. Her trauma is deep, and her triggers are real. She isn't a dog for a traditional home—she is a dog who needs a sanctuary. By keeping her here, we ensure she never has to be 'managed' by someone who doesn't understand her, and she never has to be afraid of the unknown again."
