General Sanctuary Questions.
Please reach us at sequoiadogsanctuary@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
We are located in the heart of Kern County, CA. Our rescue efforts span from the streets of Bakersfield to the surrounding orchards and agricultural fields. Because we are a private sanctuary and foster-based network, we are open by appointment only for approved partners and families.
We are always in need of foster homes for animals who are not yet ready for adoption. If you are interested in fostering an animal, please fill out a foster application on our website. We provide all necessary supplies and medical care for the animal.
We recommend that you spend time with an animal before adopting to make sure they are a good fit for your family. We also offer meet and greets with other family pets to make sure everyone gets along. Our adoption counselors will work with you to find the best match for your family.
Yes! We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All donations are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
It means we take on the cases that others often can’t. This includes dogs on euthanasia lists with significant medical needs, severe socialization deficits, or those requiring long-term decompression. We focus on the "crisis phase" to ensure the dog is stable before moving to the next chapter of their life.
Not all. We have two main categories of dogs:
While our primary goal is to stabilize dogs for our rescue partners, we do occasionally facilitate direct adoptions for dogs in our "Pipeline." Please check the Adoptables page for current availability and application links.
A "foster fail" happens when a foster parent decides to permanently adopt their foster dog. While we love all our residents, our mission is to keep our doors open for new rescues. Sal is our one exception—she chose us during our very first days, and she remains the heart of our sanctuary.
We are always looking for reliable partners in high-adoption areas. If you are a 501(c)(3) looking for "turn-key," medically stabilized dogs, please fill out the form on our Partnerships page.
Because of our founder's background as a Veterinary Technician, we provide comprehensive medical records, including stabilization notes, current medications, and behavioral assessments gathered during the decompression phase.
We are proud to offer a "Safety Net" program inspired by dogs like Ruby. While our space is very limited, we do offer long-term fostering for dedicated owners in crisis who intend to take their dogs back once they secure pet-friendly housing.
Please contact us first. Because we focus on "heavy lifting" cases from high-kill lists and specific field rescues, we must manage our intake carefully to ensure every dog gets the medical and emotional attention they need.
Donations go directly toward life-saving medical care, high-quality nutrition, and maintaining a safe environment for decompression. You can also choose to "Sponsor a Resident" to cover the monthly costs of a specific dog like Chai.
Yes! We are always in need of high-protein food, sturdy crates, and medical supplies. Please see our Amazon Wishlist for our most urgent needs.
